Empathy becomes visible when another person's experience gains enough weight to affect your pace, tone, or interpretation. It does not require total agreement or perfect understanding. It requires the willingness to stay with their perspective long enough that they stop feeling reduced to your assumptions.
Empathy in the wild
- You hear the fear underneath someone's words instead of responding only to the surface facts.
- You adjust your pace because another person is overloaded.
- You listen long enough to understand before advising, fixing, or comparing.
- A person's stress or perspective changes how you respond to them.
- Empathy shows up when someone notices what another person might be carrying, not just what they are saying out loud.
How to practice empathy
- Before responding, ask what the other person may be experiencing underneath the words.
- Reflect back what you think you heard before offering your view.
- Notice how quickly you move from understanding to advising.
- Let another person's pace shape the moment at least once each day.
