Bravery is the willingness to step toward a feared action when retreat would be easier and more socially protected.

Bravery becomes visible in exposed action: the speech given while still scared, the confrontation attempted without guarantee of support, the difficult task accepted because avoiding it would cost more in the long run. It is not swagger. It is movement while fear is still in the room.
